Facts About the Food Service Industry in Canada

Commercial sales of food services have risen steadily over the last decade and, according to Statista, Canadian food services are expected to generate sales of $78.7 billion this year.

As an essential part of the restaurant and food service industry, where more than 1.2 million workers earn their living, food service is an important and growing sector in the Canadian economy.

UFCW Canada is extremely proud of our members in the food service industry, who work hard every day to deliver high-quality, nutritious, and affordable meals to Canadians and their families.

Why Food Service Workers Join UFCW Canada

More than 10,000 UFCW members work in the Canadian food service industry, and over the last four decades, UFCW Canada has worked tirelessly to advocate for the interests of food service employees. That is why our union is the #1 choice for food service workers seeking union membership.

Choosing UFCW Canada: Food Service Workers

Food service workers join UFCW Canada because our union has a long history of winning gains for members in negotiations and serving as a strong voice for workers on the job and at the bargaining table.

Food service members know that, with UFCW in their corner, they enjoy better wages, paid time off, guaranteed breaks, pay equity and overtime pay, and job security – benefits that their non-unionized counterparts typically lack.

Other issues that our union prioritizes in the food service industry are providing members with comprehensive health and welfare benefits and ensuring that the workplace is free from intimidation and harassment.

As well, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, UFCW Canada has succeeded in obtaining improved health and safety protocols and additional training for members at numerous food service companies. Our union has also negotiated more paid sick days to ensure that no food service worker is forced to choose between their health and their livelihood. And we have worked to achieve job security for members in this sector.

In addition, food service workers choose UFCW Canada for the skills development opportunities we provide through our cutting edge online education program, webCampus. For example, our pre-apprenticeship program for Cook can help you obtain trade certification in this service trade and accreditation as a food professional. To learn more about the program, visit the Cook pre-apprenticeship program webpage.
