Retail workers at Indigo Yorkdale Mall join the union – UFCW 1006A

Toronto – August 23, 2021 – Indigo workers across Canada are continuing to choose UFCW Canada as their union with the newest workers from Indigo Yorkdale Mall joining UFCW 1006A.

“The momentum is growing for Indigo/Chapters workers who are increasingly turning to our local union to improve their working conditions and create a fairer workplace,” said UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “I’m proud to congratulate our newest members from Indigo Yorkdale Mall – this is the beginning of an exciting new chapter and shows when workers are united, they have power to transform their workplaces and their lives.”

UFCW 1006A currently represents workers at Chapters Woodbridge and Indigo Square One with these new members choosing to unionize for fairness, better treatment and to enforce their workplace rights.

“The whole campaign has been about bringing each other up and bringing each other along, equalizing and not leaving people behind,” said Indigo worker Greta Whipple. "It moved so quickly and would have been impossible without the support of UFCW Canada organizers and members of already unionized locations."

The newest UFCW 1006A members work as Customer Experience Representatives (CERs) and perform tasks that include customer service, orders, sales and stocking.
“It’s incredible and inspiring to see retail workers unionizing,” said Director of Organizing Lesley Prince. “Retail workers are standing up to raise the bar across the industry – and doing it not just for themselves but for others too.”
