Toronto – May 19, 2021 – UFCW Canada’s groundbreaking diversity and inclusion initiative, the Women and Racialized Leaders Institute, recently concluded its ten-week program having engaged nearly 40 participants across UFCW Canada Local Unions.

The fully bilingual Institute included a partnership with UFCW Canada’s digital learning platform, webCampus, that allowed participants to engage content at their own pace, then meet virtually over four zoom sessions to share their thoughts and learnings with other participants.

Participants discussed topics such as inclusive leadership, emotional intelligence, effective negotiations, and communicating as a leader.

Participants were greeted by guest speakers, including Bea Bruske, UFCW 832 Secretary-Treasurer and candidate for CLC President; Kim Novak, UFCW 1518 President; Lucy Figueiredo, UFCW 1400 Secretary-Treasurer; Thulasi Srikanthan, UFCW 1006A Communications Representative; and Anouk Collet, UFCW Canada Executive Assistant to the National President.    

Other guest speakers throughout the ten-week program included: Yolanda McClean, President of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists; Mohammed Hashim, Executive Director, Canadian Race Relations; Sussanne Skidmore, BCFED Secretary-Treasurer; Pablo Vivanco, Director of the Jane/Finch Community and Family Center; Amira Elghawaby, journalist; and Stephanie Harpe, Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls activist.

The Institute was also honoured to have Bochra Manaï, Commissaire – Lutte contre le racisme et les discriminations systemiques a la Ville de Montréal.
