Toronto – February 10, 2021 – UFCW Canada is pleased to release its latest report, Our Commitment to Reconciliation 2021.

Canada’s history of colonialism and ongoing attempts to sever the connection between Indigenous peoples and the land has had profound and long-lasting impacts on Indigenous communities. With this report, we affirm our union’s commitment to ensure that worker justice is synonymous with Indigenous justice.

The report features our work since the formation of the UFCW Canada Indigenous Sub-Committee in 2016. It also outlines the human rights pillars through which we undertake reconciliation-based actions. This includes the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The ongoing Indigenous solidarity work carried out by UFCW Canada local unions is also featured in the report along with tips on strengthening Indigenous representation at the bargaining table, at work, in the community and through lobbying efforts.

The release of this report comes at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic continues to highlight societal inequities which disproportionately affect Indigenous peoples. As we work to advance the rights of Indigenous peoples, we must remain vigilant in ensuring that no one is left behind in a just COVID-19 recovery. This also includes centering the voices of Indigenous workers, the first workers on Turtle Island and with whom we stand in solidarity.
