UFCW supports International Fast Food Workers Day – November 17

Canada’s labour movement launches new national survey on workplace violence and harassment
Fast Food Workers Day: Self-Filming Instructions

Toronto – November 12, 2020 – As the union for food workers, UFCW Canada will be observing this year’s International Fast Food Workers Day on November 17, and our union is encouraging members, activists, and allies to show their support for fast food workers by participating in the global day of action on social media.

Since 2014, fast food workers, labour unions, and concerned citizens around the world have joined forces on International Food Workers Day as part of a growing campaign to build power for fast food workers. Hosted by the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations (IUF), past actions have included strikes, public protests, and rallies demanding union rights and recognition, better pay, and a safe workplace for all fast food workers.

Due to the limitations presented by COVID-19, and in an effort to keep participants safe, this year’s International Fast Food Workers Day will be held digitally on November 17 and will demand an end to sexual violence and harassment in the fast food sector.

UFCW Canada members, activists, and allies are encouraged to participate in the day by sharing a short video, selfie, or picture on social media explaining why you support ending sexual harassment in the fast food industry, and/or why you believe fast food workers deserve the same rights and respect as other workers in Canada. Be sure to include the hashtag #FastFoodGlobal in your post.

For instructions on how to shoot a short video on your phone and upload it to social media, see the downloadable instructions guide on this page.

Throughout International Fast Food Workers Day, the IUF will also be live-streaming three events alongside various pre-recorded videos, and activists are encouraged to watch for these videos and events on the IUF’s Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as UFCW Canada’s social media pages.

UFCW is the leading union for food workers in Canada and represents fast food workers at Tim Horton’s, Jollibee Canada, Wendy’s, as well as other fast food companies. To learn more about UFCW Canada’s presence in the food industry, see our union’s latest Annual Report.
