Halifax – October 30, 2020 – Due to health and safety restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the UFCW Canada Eastern Province’s Council (EPC) held this year’s regional Light the Night event at the Hotel Halifax, where activists, friends, and family were able to socially distance in a safe environment while raising funds in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).

This year’s event featured a live stream of other Light the Night gatherings across Canada, as well as musical performances and speakers that included blood cancer survivors, their families, medical professionals, Canadian and international celebrities, and major donators like UFCW Canada staff and members.  

The East Coast celebration was also graced with an appearance from the LLSC’s former mascot, Spike the Dinosaur, who stopped by to spread cheer and entertain the young people in attendance.

“I’m very encouraged by the fact that, despite all the challenges we have faced this year, UFCW EPC staff, members, and family still took the time to come together during this pandemic and put their time and money to good use in helping those in need,” says Mark Dobson, UFCW Canada Regional Director for the Eastern Provinces.

“Regardless of any obstacles in our way, the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council and Team Luminary took back the night in 2020,” he adds.

The UFCW EPC event was one of many actions being taken by the UFCW Canada fundraising team in support of the LLSC this year. Across the country, UFCW is also encouraging members, activists, and allies to ride your bike, walk your dog, take a stroll down the street, or starting your own team or fundraising page to help find a cure for blood cancers. You can also support Team UFCW Canada, who is fundraising hard to make sure our union meets the LLSC’s challenge to “Walk Across Canada” in 2020.

Since 1985, UFCW Canada members have raised more than $45.1 million for the LLSC. And this year, UFCW activists, families, and supporters have started combining their steps towards the goal of 7,821 kms – the distance from coast to coast.
