Winnipeg – October 15, 2020 – UFCW 832 members are holding the line strong at Stella’s Café on Sherbrook Street, while a boycott has now been served up at seven other Stella’s Café locations across the city.
UFCW 832 has called for the boycott, to pressure the company to bargain a new contract for members at the Sherbrook Street location. The member’s first contract expired in September. Bargaining for a new contract began in June, but for months the company has refused to budge on key items.
Stella’s is popular Winnipeg café and bakery chain. Local 832 helped workers at two Stella’s locations unionize in the fall of 2018, including the location on Sherbrook Street. The other unionized location on Osborne street closed earlier this year. The strike at the Sherbrook location began in mid-September.
“Ownership and upper-management at Stella’s have never understood that when you ignore your problems, they don’t just go away,” stated Jeff Traeger, president of UFCW Local 832. “The Employer somehow thinks that if they do nothing, the Union will just go away. We are not going anywhere, and we will continue to push for better treatment and conditions for our members.”
