BDM Scholarship gives financial boost to UFCW 401 family member

Calgary – September 14, 2020 – Bahaaldeen Zahlan is one of eighteen winners of the UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship. Currently completing a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Marketing at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Bahaaldeen is the son of Salah Zahlan, a proud UFCW Local 401 member who works at Real Canadian Superstore.

Brother Zahlan had the following to say about winning a UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship:

“Upon receiving the BDM Scholarship, I was caught by surprise and yet tremendously happy at the same time. Currently, my family's financial situation is just enough for all of us to get by. My father is the sole money earner and his income goes towards the mortgage, vehicle expenses, everyday shopping, and my education, as well as my brother's schooling. By applying for scholarships and bursaries such as the UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship, I can do my part as a full-time student to help pay for some of my education costs. This money will not only relieve the continuous financial stress we have been facing – it has also made us realize that there are people out there who care about our family's wellbeing and are able to lend a helping hand. To me, this matters a lot, and I very much appreciate the support. My parents want me to succeed in life by using my post-secondary education to find a good career. And this scholarship is motivating me to achieve that goal. Thank you, UFCW Canada!”

The UFCW Canada – BDM Scholarship offers a total of $18,000 in scholarships to UFCW Canada members and their families and is one of more than 25 union scholarships available to members and their families every year, totaling more than $300,000 in support.

The fast-approaching deadline to apply for this year’s BDM Scholarship is September 30, 2020.
