Grocery members at Jan’s Valu-Mart achieve gains – UFCW 1006A
Deep River, Ont. – August 4, 2020 – UFCW Local 1006A members working at Jan’s Valu-Mart have ratified a new union contract that provides improved language, wage protection, and more.
Highlights of the new three-year collective agreement include:
- A reduction in the part-time progression from 8,001 hours to 5,951 hours, meaning it will take part-time workers significantly less time to reach the top wage rate;
- A reduction in the student wage progression, from 2,950 hours to 2,350 hours, so that students can reach top wage rate faster; and
- Minimum wage protection for top rate part-time workers to ensure their wages stay above junior employees should the minimum wage increase beyond the end rate.
“Despite the difficulties of bargaining during a pandemic, our negotiating committee did an outstanding job in securing a strong contract for the members at Jan’s Valu-Mart,” says UFCW Local 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “I would like to congratulate members on their new union contract and commend the negotiating committee members on a job well done.”
Bargaining was conducted by UFCW 1006A Union Representative Gord Albert, with support from Regional Director Roland Lapins and members Liz Law and Bonnie Gadd.
"The most unique aspect to these negotiations was the way we bargained during the pandemic through conference calls, followed by a ratification meeting observing COVID-19 safety protocols,” says Albert. “Thank you to our bargaining committee members for their hard work and thanks to the membership for their support."
