UFCW proudly sponsors Stand! The Movie

Winnipeg – November 5, 2019 – Stand!, a movie musical highlighting the struggles of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, will be debuting at Cineplex theatres across Canada on November 29, and UFCW Canada members and their families can access discounted tickets to see the epic movie being dubbed “the next Norma Rae.”

The result of a partnership between Canada’s labour movement, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the movie’s producers, Stand! is a Romeo and Juliet story set against the backdrop of 1919 Winnipeg, where on May 15, more than 30,000 workers went on a general strike. In the wake of the General Strike, two strikers were killed, thirty were injured, and strike leaders ended up on trial, but ultimately the event served as a turning point in uniting the labour movement and entrenching collective bargaining rights.

Composed, co-written, and produced by Winnipeg’s Danny Schur, Stand! was made possible in part through the support of UFCW Canada and other labour allies, and will be digitally delivered through the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to half-a-million high school students across the country following its commercial theatre run.

“By detailing the lessons and era of the Winnipeg General Strike, Stand! is playing a vital role in helping to raise awareness of the Canadian labour movement,” says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. “It is very important to bring this story to the world, and our union is honoured to support this essential movie,” he adds.

Tickets for Stand! are now on sale, and UFCW Canada members can access group discounts – available to groups of 20 to 99 people – by purchasing tickets before November 22.
