Toronto – October 28, 2019 – UFCW Canada was pleased to attend the annual LEAF Persons Day Gala in Toronto on October 24, where our union served as a Justice Sponsor for the event.
Persons Day commemorates the October 18, 1929 decision to include women in the legal definition of persons, handed down by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of Great Britain, Canada's highest court of appeal at that time. Following that ruling, women were able to sit in the Canadian Senate.
Since the fundraiser's inception, the Persons Day Gala has raised over $4 million in support of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund’s work to fight for substantive equality for all women.
UFCW Canada is to proud to call LEAF our national partner in advocacy and action on women's rights. To this extent, both organizations have signed a mutual support agreement to further our commitment towards achieving gender equity. Together with UFCW Locals 12R24, 102, 175, and 1006A, UFCW Canada presented LEAF with a $15,000 sponsorship in support of their work at the Persons Day Gala. As well, Ontario members representing their union on UFCW Canada's Human Rights, Equity and Diversity Committee joined UFCW representatives to provide cross-country representation at this important event.
In addition to extending greetings on behalf of our union to the 400+ activists in attendance, UFCW Canada activists supported a great cause and affirmed our commitment to continue advocating for women’s rights, the right to consent, and full gender equity in Canada.
As Canada’s leading union, UFCW is committed to closing the gender wage gap and achieving equity for women workers across the country. For more information on UFCW Canada’s advocacy efforts for women, visit our Women and Gender Equity Committee webpage.
