Calgary and Moncton, N.B. – September 5, 2019 – UFCW Canada activists, family members, and allies marked the end of the 2019 Pride season by celebrating the LGBTQ12S community at colourful parades in Calgary, Alberta and Moncton, New Brunswick.

In Calgary, tens of thousands of spectators lined the streets of downtown on September 1 as participants paraded along 6th Avenue and through the East Village sporting colourful costumes, flags, and banners.

For the fourteenth year in a row, UFCW Canada Local 401 activists made up one of the largest contingents at the parade, with the Local 401 “Love is Love” float boldly decked out in rainbows and UFCW blue and gold. Dozens of UFCW Local 401 and Local 1118 activists and family members marched in the event, waving to spectators as they made their way along the parade route.

Once again, the parade capped off a week-long festival of dances, performances, and seminars to promote equality and inclusion in the Stampede City.

In Moncton, UFCW Local 1288P members and activists from the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC) marched along Main Street on August 31 at the Greater Moncton River of Pride Parade, celebrating advancements in LGBTTQ12S rights and calling for an end to discriminatory practices that remain – like gay conversion therapy.

According to event organizers, this year’s parade was the most well-attended yet. It also marked the third East Coast Pride parade that EPC members participated in.

Winding down the annual string of events promoting LGBTQI2S rights across the country, the Calgary and Moncton parades are the last big-city parades of Pride season in Canada.

As Canada’s most progressive union, UFCW plays a leading role in advocating for full equality and opportunity for members of the LGBTQI2S community. As part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion, our union has partnered with numerous organizations to develop resources aimed at promoting inclusion in the workplace.
