Moncton, N.B. – June 6, 2019 – Activists from the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC) recently joined hundreds of participants from across New Brunswick at the inaugural Community Light the Night walk in Moncton to help raise funds and awareness for the life-changing work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
At the event, participants walked in solidarity through the Moncton Riverfront Park to help bring support and hope to the hundreds of thousands of Canadians affected by blood cancers. Walkers carried illuminated lanterns symbolizing light in the dark world of cancer – with red lanterns for supporters, white lanterns for patients and survivors, and gold lanterns for friends and family members who have lost someone to blood cancer.
Led by a host of volunteers, and with the help of UFCW Canada EPC activists, the event raised more than $16,000 for the vital research, outreach, and education work of the LLSC.
“This was the first Community Light the Night Walk held in Moncton and we were absolutely thrilled with the participation and turnout,” says Mark Dobson, President of the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council. “I’d like to thank all the volunteers and activists who made this event such a great success. Together, we helped raise thousands of dollars for the life-saving work of the LLSC,” Brother Dobson adds.
Since 1985, through contributions from members across the country, UFCW Canada has been the LLSC’s most valued partner, raising over $41.4 million and paving the way to many advancements in the treatments and outcomes of blood cancer.
