UFCW 832 leads the way at 1919 Solidarity Parade

Winnipeg – June 3, 2019 – UFCW Canada Local 832 activists recently joined over 2,000 Manitobans from across the province at the 1919 Solidarity Parade to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Winnipeg General Strike.

The Winnipeg General Strike was the largest strike in Canadian history. As part of the historic labour struggle, more than 30,000 workers walked off their jobs, shutting down factories, shops, transit, and city services in the process.

As the presenting sponsor of the Solidarity Parade, UFCW Local 832 led the event with a custom-built float, which was a recreation of the iconic streetcar that was tipped over during the strike.

"It was wonderful to see so many union members and activists come out in support of this parade," says Jeff Traeger, President of UFCW Local 832. "There was a great turnout overall, but I'm especially proud of all the Local 832 activists who showed up and helped make this event special,” he added.

Held in downtown Winnipeg, the parade started at 11am on the corner of Market and Lily in the Exchange District and made its way down Portage Avenue, finally ending at Memorial Park in front of the Manitoba Legislature. Participants then took in the Solidarity Forever Community Concert for the afternoon.
