Canola processing members in SK win new deal with Bunge, UFCW 248P

Nipawin, Sask. – September 25, 2018 – Food processing members at UFCW 248P recently achieved a new contract with one of Canada’s largest agri-food companies, Bunge North America.

Working at the Bunge facility in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, the UFCW 248P members made a number of gains, including:

  • Wage increases throughout the new contract
  • Enhanced coverage for vision care and eye glasses
  • Employer paid time for union information sessions
  • New apprenticeship and skilled trades language

“We are happy the members have ratified this collective agreement,” says UFCW Local 248P President Pat Horbay. “The bargaining committee has done an exceptional job. Congratulations to the committee and members for their work.”

The UFCW 248P workers in Nipawin join other UFCW Canada members at Bunge in Manitoba, Quebec and Ontario, who, together, make much of the country’s canola oil and by-products.

Canadian canola products are exported to more than 50 countries around the world and generate billions of dollars towards the country’s GDP.

When crushed into oil, conola provides one of the healthiest cooking oil options, with the lowest level of saturated fat, at seven percent. It’s also a great source of omega-3 three, which has been proven to help reduce cholesterol.

In addition to canola oil, UFCW Canada members at Bunge also make a number of by-products – like animal feed – that are key to the meat sector, where thousands of UFCW Canada members also work.
