Castlegar, B.C. – April 28, 2018 – UFCW Canada Local 247 activists recently joined dozens of participants in Castlegar, British Columbia for the community’s first-ever Light the Night walk in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
Both survivors and supporters braved the pouring rain at Millennium Park for the town’s inaugural walk, helping raise money for the LLSC’s vital support services, advocacy, and life-saving research for those battling leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and other blood cancers.
The Light the Night walk is an annual tradition in communities across North America, bringing together friends, families, and co-workers to walk in unity at twilight, each holding an illuminated lantern to symbolize light in the dark world of cancer – red for supporters, white for patients and survivors, and gold to remember loved ones lost.
UFCW Canada and our Local Unions are proud and longstanding supporters of the annual event.
For over three decades, UFCW Canada members and community allies have organized and participated in numerous fundraising activities for the LLSC – including Light the Night walks, community picnics, raffles, sports tournaments and more. To date, UFCW Canada has raised over $38 million in the fight against blood cancers, making Canada’s leading union the LLSC’s most valued partner.
