Toronto – April 24, 2018 – UFCW Canada activists recently participated in the 2nd Filipino Workers Network (FWN) Conference, held at the United Steel Workers Hall in Toronto. The theme of this year’s conference was “Uniting Filipino Workers for Good Jobs, Fairness, and Justice.”

At the event, participants heard from keynote speaker Luisa Blue, who spoke about the need for labour unions to make racial justice a priority. Attendees also heard from Toronto and York Region Labor Council President John Cartwright, who explored the history of the labour movement in Ontario and the role that unions play in achieving equity and justice at work.

Later in the day, the Ontario Federation of Labour’s Director of Political Action and Outreach, Melissa Bayon, discussed how the Fight for $15 campaign achieved a historic victory in Ontario while securing broader gains for workers through the Changing Workplaces Review.  Conference-goers also learned about the Ontario NDP’s platform for the upcoming provincial election in June, which includes universal child care and pharmacare for everyone.

Finally, UFCW Canada National Representative Alex Banaag explained how UFCW is building workers’ networks across the province to help more people gain the union advantage in their workplace.

“By working together and educating employees about their rights under the law, we can empower more workers to organize and help them enjoy the benefits of having a union in their corner,” Banaag told conference attendees.
