Saskatoon, Sask. – March 13, 2018 – Dozens of UFCW Canada women activists and allies from across Saskatchewan recently gathered in Saskatoon for the annual Saskatchewan Women's Conference. The theme of this year's event – hosted by UFCW Canada Local 1400 – was #PressForProgress.

Now in its twelfth year, the unique two-day conference coincided with International Women’s Day and was attended by women activists from UFCW Canada Locals 1400, 649, and 248P, as well as sisters from other public and private sector unions throughout Saskatchewan.

Attendees at the conference were greeted by Maria Linklater, a respected Elder in Saskatoon who opened the event with a blessing, smudge, and stories of her experience as a First Nations woman in Canada. Participants also heard from Manuela Valle-Castro, a professor in Women’s and Gender Studies who spoke about the emerging “third wave” of feminism and what #PressForProgress means to her.

In addition, the conference featured a workshop on closing the gender wage gap, where activists committed to several “calls to action” to help #PressForProgress on this important issue.

“The Saskatchewan Women’s Conference was a resounding success for the twelfth straight year, as sisters left feeling empowered, united, and eager to make a difference in their workplaces, their unions, and in their communities,” says Lucy Flack Figueiredo, the Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW Canada Local 1400.
