Ottawa – March 7, 2018 – UFCW Canada recently met with the new Agriculture and Agri-Food Critic, NDP MP Alistair MacGregor, to flesh out a number of important food sector issues facing UFCW Canada members and families.

MacGregor, the Member of Parliament for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford, and newly-minted vice-chair of the parliamentary standing committee for Agriculture and Agri-Food, reconfirmed the NDP’s unwavering commitment to protecting Canada’s supply management system.

Long-providing Canadians with a safe and stable food supply, the supply management system also serves a central role in beefing up the national economy – and the economies of countless small towns and communities across the country – by ensuring thousands of good union jobs in the food processing sector.

UFCW Canada also thanked MacGregor for speaking to the union’s resolution on the establishment of a National Food Policy, which was introduced at the recent NDP convention, and unanimously passed by more than 2,000 delegates.

Joined by Diana Bronson, the executive director of Food Secure Canada, UFCW Canada also discussed the importance of making sure food workers have a seat at the table in developing the policies that will shape the country’s food system, and reputation as a global food supplier, for the 21st century.

“The policies and trade agreements impacting Canadian agri-food have a direct impact on UFCW Canada members, and we are looking forward to working with MP MacGregor to ensure that the perspectives, of Canada’s food workers are an important part of the policy development and governance process,” says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. “We congratulate Mr. MacGregor on his new position and look forward to exchanging ideas in the future.”
