Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Huntsville, Ont. – January 22, 2018 – UFCW Canada Local Unions and activists were out in full force on January 20 to show solidarity at Women’s Marches across the country, and with other Women’s Marches being held around the world.

Activists and participants of all ages, genders, and backgrounds gathered in over 40 Canadian cities to denounce gender-based discrimination, violence and harassment, and to highlight the struggles of women from marginalized backgrounds – including women of colour and those from the LGBTQI2S community.

“I am proud to be part of the thousands of women marching in solidarity for equity and justice,” says UFCW Canada Ontario Regional Director Debora De Angelis. “Our voices represent change and together, we can ensure that we keep fighting and advocating for working women and their families,” Sister De Angelis adds.

The marches were inspired by last year’s Women’s March on Washington and its sister marches, which saw over 5 million participants march in cities around the world to inspire, unite, and lead the charge for the advancement of women globally.

“It is encouraging to see such a strong display of solidarity from the tens of thousands of people who came out to participate in this year’s Women’s Marches,” says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. “Together, we can build on this momentum by redoubling our efforts to advance women’s rights, and by working towards equity, justice, and respect for all,” he adds.

Women’s March Canada is proudly supported by UFCW Canada and is comprised of volunteers from across the country. For more information on UFCW Canada’s advocacy for women, visit www.ufcw.ca/women. For more information on Women’s March Canada, click here.
