Montreal – November 10, 2017 – UFCW Canada Local 500 activist Rosannie Filato has been elected as the new city councillor for the Montreal borough of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc Extension after defeating incumbent councillor Elsie Lefebvre in the city’s municipal election, held on November 5.

“On behalf of UFCW Canada’s 250,000 members, I would like to congratulate Rosannie on her breakthrough victory in Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc Extension,” says Paul Meinema, the National President of UFCW Canada. “Sister Filato is an incredibly smart, hard-working, and dedicated activist, and I know she will do a fantastic job in representing the citizens of her borough,” Brother Meinema adds.

Rosannie ran for the Villeray seat as part of the Projet Montréal team, led by the newly-elected mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante. During the election, the team campaigned on a progressive platform promising improved transit, better construction site management, and renewed investments in the services and programs that workers and their families value most.

Prior to being elected as the new city councillor for Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc Extension, Sister Filato worked as an in-house lawyer for UFCW Canada Local 500. She also ran as a candidate for the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the 2015 Federal Election.
