Toronto – October 19, 2017 – UFCW Canada activists recently took to the streets of Toronto to join over 6,000 activists for a march and rally to denounce hate and bigotry in Canada and across the globe.

Held at Queen's Park, the anti-hate rally brought thousands together from a diversity of cultures, religions, and community groups for a peaceful showing of solidarity. The October 15 gathering was in response to the recent rise of hateful and racist acts taking place in public spaces around the world.

Many at the Toronto rally spoke out against the current social and political climate in the United States, which has brought to light increased acts of racist aggression across both sides of the border.

"It is vital that the labour movement stand in solidarity with our communities against any type of discrimination, racism, or xenophobia,” says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. "Canada’s strength is built on diversity and we stand united against hate, intolerance and divisiveness.”

As Canada's leading union, UFCW Canada is on the forefront of challenging discrimination in the workplace and has established a number of initiatives in order to combat these issues at work, including strong collective bargaining agreements denouncing discrimination and the development of anti-oppression education resources.
