Once again, the Stephen Harper government has viciously attacked migrant and temporary workers in Canada.

In spite of the fact that migrant and temporary foreign workers pay millions of dollars every year into the Employment Insurance (EI) fund, they have now been cut off from receiving the EI Special Benefits their premiums pay for. Seasonal migrant agriculture workers alone pay more than $25 million in EI premiums , but they and other temporary workers have now been essentially barred from receiving benefits that other workers in Canada receive.

It is the Great Tory Ripoff of Migrant Workers. It is like being forced to buy mandatory auto insurance but you are excluded from coverage.

The Great Tory Ripoff of Migrant Workers was announced by Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development without consultation, notice, or right to appeal. It is grossly unfair, not in keeping with Canadian values, and the latest blow by the Harper government against some of the most vulnerable workers in Canada.

Send a message to Minister Finley to Stop the Great Tory Ripoff of Migrant Workers by dropping the abusive EI changes that blatantly discriminate against migrant and temporary foreign workers.

Minister Finley: I am writing to ask you to undo the discriminatory changes you recently announced to EI regulations to exclude temporary foreign workers from the special benefit provisions of the Act. Migrant and Temporary Foreign workers pay full EI premiums, but with your new changes they will now receive little or no benefit for the premiums they pay. In fact, just seasonal migrant agriculture workers alone contribute approximately $25 million in to the EI fund annually. They and other temporary workers in Canada make an enormous contribution to the Canadian economy and community; often doing hard, grueling and dangerous work. They deserve respect, but instead your government has targeted them through a change in regulation that is blatantly discriminatory and an abuse of some of the most vulnerable workers in Canada. Without notice, and without the right to appeal, your government has chosen to prey on the vulnerable. I strongly object to your government's action which is grossly unfair, injurious, and not in keeping with Canadian values. Minister, I urge you to immediately revoke the summary change in EI regulations, and re-instate the right of all workers who contribute to EI to have equal access to the Special Benefits of the program.
