UFCW Canada activists from across Eastern Canada joined nearly 1,700 participants in the annual Atlantic Region Light the Night Walk at the Halifax Commons in Halifax to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
The Society battles deadly blood cancers by raising funds for blood cancer research and providing educational materials, events, and support groups to leukemia and lymphoma patients and their families.
UFCW Canada members and staff from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia participated in the walk under the name "Team Luminary" and raised over $25,000, making them the top fundraising team in all of Atlantic Canada.
Over the course of an hour, the walkers carried illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer – to show their support for bringing light to the dark world of cancer. In total the walk raised approximately $270,000.
"These funds are desperately needed to continue important research into finding a cure for leukemia and lymphoma," said Team Luminary Co-Captain, and UFCW Canada national representative, Tim Hosford. "I’m happy to say that with the participation of UFCW Canada members, activists, and family from every province in Atlantic Canada, Team Luminary accomplished our fundraising objectives and for that we can all be proud."
