Staples Business Depot workers in Winnipeg vote “Yes!” to UFCW Canada

Retail workers at a Staples Business Depot location in Winnipeg, Manitoba have voted “Yes!” to UFCW Canada.

The new Staples members proudly join UFCW Canada Local 832, Manitoba’s leading voice for workers. The Staples victory in Winnipeg follows other organizing breakthroughs in the Canadian retail industry, including H &M units in Quebec and Ontario.

Building strength in the retail industry is key to protecting the collective bargaining gains of UFCW Canada members and to improving the living standards of all workers.

The campaign, led by Local 832 organizing director Sonia Taylor, involved a number of SPURs (special project union reps) who supported Staples workers in their successful drive at the city’s Staples Business Centre on Leila Avenue.

“Local 832 if fully committed to working hard for the new Staples members as it does for the rest of membership,” says UFCW Local 832 President Jeff Traeger. “They have joined the right union, as we have many years of experience in the retail and servicing sector.”

President Traeger has assigned union negotiator Michelle Masserey to the new unit. She will set up proposal meetings and notify the members of the scheduled date and time. At the meeting members will have a chance to forward their concerns and ideas of what they would like to see in their first collective agreement.
