Regina, Sask. – October 31, 2016 – Following comments from Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall indicating that the provincial government may privatize the beloved SaksTel crown corporation, UFCW Canada activists attended the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour Convention last week to mobilize delegates in calling on the government to “Keep SaskTel Public.”

The publicly-owned SaskTel is the province’s leading provider of wireless, internet, and home phone services, and is renowned for offering outstanding telecommunications services at some of the lowest prices in Canada. It has also contributed almost $1.2 billion in profits to provincial coffers in the last ten years alone. This money helps provide vital social services while keeping taxes and user fees low.

At the convention, activists from UFCW Canada’s National Office and Local 1400 engaged with delegates asking them to support UFCW’s campaign – entitled “Keep SaskTel Public” – to make sure that the valuable crown corporation stays in public hands. Hundreds of delegates gathered at UFCW Canada’s convention booth to sign e-petitions calling on Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan Party to keep their hands off SaskTel.

“SaskTel is a strong public service that provides good-paying jobs here in Saskatchewan, and we need to stand together to stop the government from selling this valuable asset,” said Norm Neault, the President of UFCW Canada Local 1400. “So we are telling the Wall government that SaskTel needs to remain a publicly-owned crown corporation, and that we do not give the government permission to privatize this wonderful service,” he added.
