UFCW Canada stands in solidarity with striking workers at Canadian Blood Services

Charlottetown, P.E.I. – July 22, 2016 – Canada's leading and most progressive union, UFCW Canada, proudly stands in solidarity with striking workers at Canadian Blood Services in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, who have been on strike since September of last year.

The group of part-time workers, who are members of the Nova Scotia Union of Public and Private Employees (NSUPE), are striking for guaranteed minimum hours, as well as fairness on the job. They are calling on Canadian Blood Services to provide enough hours to enable workers to support their families and maintain their eligibility for medical benefits.

Since the strike began in September 2015, almost 8,000 appointments for blood donations have been missed, all because Canadian Blood Services wants an on-demand workforce that will work minimal hours and forego benefits in order to help the company’s bottom line.
