Toronto – April 22, 2016 – Earlier this month, several UFCW Canada activists from across the country converged in Toronto for the week-long "Organizers Training for Women Activists" course.

The course, which was facilitated by UFCW Canada National Coordinator for Strategic Campaigns Debora De Angelis and National Representative Zenee Maceda, focused on organizing with a gender and equity lens and dealing with anti-union campaigns.

Course participants from UFCW Locals 1000A, 401, 1518, and 500 learned about a number of labour laws through hands-on exercises designed to build confidence and knowledge when speaking about labour rights to potential members. At the end of the course, participants were equipped with strategies used to overcome equity barriers, develop effective organizing skills, and organize using inclusive approaches and perspectives.

"The knowledge and skills I have learned in this course will not go to waste," says UFCW Canada Local 1518 member Brenda S. "I have already contacted my fellow shop stewards and will meet with them next week to share what I have learned,” she adds.

UFCW Canada is planning to hold more "Organizers Training for Women Activists" courses in the future. To learn more about UFCW Canada's advocacy for women, visit www.ufcw.ca/women.
