Toronto – March 21, 2016 – The annual Students Against Migrant Exploitation (SAME) tour has once again hit the road in support of the fight against migrant worker exploitation.

The tour, which kicked off at the end of February at the KDocs Film Festival in Surrey, B.C., has spanned across the country in an effort to inspire young people to take a stand against migrant worker exploitation.

For the third straight year, SAME opened the Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS) Annual Global Citizens conference in Toronto, speaking to hundreds of students from different Toronto-area high schools.

So far, the group has done over 40 presentations in schools, colleges, and universities, delivering a message of migrant worker rights and demonstrating how art can be used for societal change. In just over two weeks, SAME has reached out to over 2,500 students and youth face-to-face.

As well, students involved with the SAME Brock Chapter recently held a special screening of the acclaimed documentary El Contrato, which takes a critical look at the plight of migrant workers in southern Ontario. The students used the screening as a chance to reinforce the fact that the conditions experienced in the documentary are still being experienced by many migrant farm workers today.

"This year's tour is shaping up to be one of the most successful," says SAME Co-ordinator Pablo Godoy. "We have received tons of support from our SAME chapters at York University in Toronto and Brock University in St. Catherines. Words cannot describe how well-received this year's tour has been. Hundreds of students have sent messages of support and pledges to get involved and we are hoping to launch a chapter this year at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, B.C."

Since its inception, SAME has grown into Canada's leading organization dedicated to engaging youth on migrant worker issues. If you are or your school would like to book a FREE presentation, or would like more information about volunteer opportunities, please contact [email protected] or visit the SAME Facebook page.
