Saskatoon, Sask.  – March 14, 2016 – Dozens of UFCW Canada women activists and allies from across Saskatchewan recently gathered in Saskatoon for the annual Saskatchewan Women's Conference. The theme of this year's event, which was hosted by UFCW Canada Local 1400, was "Resilience: The Strength of Women Living with Disability".

Now in its tenth year, the unique two-day conference was attended by activists from Saskatchewan's labour movement including UFCW Canada Locals 1400, 649 and 248P as well as women activists from other public and private sector unions across Saskatchewan.

Attendees at the conference were greeted by a moving and welcoming speech by UFCW Canada Local 1400 President Norm Neault, who spoke on the importance of women in the social justice movement. Other notable speakers at the event included, Danielle Chartier (MLA Saskatoon-Riversdale), Tracy Seidel of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour's Aboriginal Committee, Ellen Gaunt, board member of Light of the Prairies, and Paige Kezima, a community organizer for the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour.

The conference also featured workshops focused on women's and family issues as well as seminars that emphasized the importance of electing governments that will promote family and workers’ rights. Other workshops focused on becoming more active in the collective bargaining process to better represent the diversity in the labour movement.

UFCW Canada Local 1400 sisters who are currently on strike at Best Western Seven Oaks in Regina also attended the conference and shared some of their experiences on the picket line.

The conference was a success and for the tenth straight year, sisters attending left feeling empowered, united and eager to making a difference and having a voice in the upcoming Saskatchewan provincial election.
