UFCW 1000A member an iPad winner of UFCW BDM Scholarship Contest

IPad winner Marisol Cartagena receives congratulations from UFCW Canada Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer.

Toronto – January 11, 2016 – Congratulations to Local 1000A Marisol Cartagena as a winner of an iPad for referring other members to apply for a UFCW Canada - BDM Scholarship.

To create more awareness of this renowned union scholarship, UFCW Canada recently held a referral contest that attracted hundreds of additional scholarship applications. Every member who referred an eligible student to apply for a 2015 UFCW Canada - BDM Scholarship received a chance to win a brand new Apple iPad.

Sister Cartagena, who works as a part-time Health and Beauty Clerk at a Toronto Loblaws Real Canadian Superstore, encouraged many members to apply for the 2015 scholarship. She has also been a recipient of a UFCW Canada - BDM scholarship and Local 1000A scholarship in previous years.

"I am grateful and thankful to my union for continuing to help post-secondary students at a time when tuition costs are skyrocketing," says Marisol, who is in her third year of a Child Development Program. "The UFCW Canada- BDM Scholarship really made a difference for me and I wanted to do what I could to help other students by making them aware of this opportunity."
