Canada's leading youth activist program hosts first-ever Quebec session

Sherbrooke, Quebec – September 28, 2015 – UFCW Canada's leading program for youth, the Young-Workers Internship Program, recently completed its inaugural session in Quebec, known as SAJ, where 16 young workers from across the province gathered in Sherbrooke for a week of dynamic learning and training.

Throughout the week-long session, participants had the opportunity to learn about a variety of topics including labour history, organizing, globalization, diversity, and more.  The young workers brought a real sense of purpose and energy to the program. Coming with a wide range of work and life experience, they engaged in political topics with a critical perspective.

The group enthusiastically they took on collective bargaining exercises that tested their understanding and skills around a central piece of union life. Whether they played the roles of members, union representatives, or company officials, they continued to learn about the importance of workplace democracy.

"Young workers will be the ones to carry on the work of creating and building the labour movement," says UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. "The young activists who gathered at the inaugural SAJ session were truly inspiring and we are fortunate to have them in our ranks."
