Workers at Best Western Plus Burlington join the union – UFCW 206
Burlington, Ont. – July 10, 2015 – Workers at the Best Western Plus in Burlington, Ontario are the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 206 after voting to join the union last month.
The Best Western Plus members work as housekeepers, laundry workers, kitchen staff, and food and beverage servers for one of the most popular hotel chains in Canada. Their reasons for joining the union included workload issues, health and safety concerns, a lack of sick days, and a desire to achieve better wages and benefits.
"We would like to congratulate the new members at Best Western Plus, who have shown that a better workplace is possible when we stand together for positive change," says UFCW Canada Local 206 President Wayne Hanley. "This victory strengthens and diversifies the UFCW membership by expanding our union's representation in the rapidly growing hospitality sector."
The employees at Best Western Plus join many other UFCW Canada Local 206 members who work in the hospitality industry, including members at the Hilton Garden Inn Toronto/Vaughan, the Residence Inn Mississauga, and the Manitoulin Hotel & Conference Centre, among others.
UFCW Canada is the country’s leading private sector union, with more than 250,000 members working in various industries across Canada.
