Migrant Workers Scholarship nominator profile: Zipporah Mainye

Toronto – June 26, 2015 – Peter Mainye is one of 20 recipients of the 2014 UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship. Peter was nominated by his sister, Zipporah Mainye, who is working as a live-in caregiver in Canada to pursue a better life for herself and her family.

Originally from Kenya, Zipporah's life has been very difficult. Her parents do not work and she is responsible for ensuring that Peter and the rest of her siblings finish their schooling. The UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship will help pay for Peter's school supplies and extracurricular activities, which will enrich his learning environment and help him work toward his dream of becoming a civil engineer.

Zipporah, meanwhile, has pursued part-time schooling as a personal support worker, and she hopes to bring her nine-year-old daughter, Malion, to live with her in Canada once she obtains her permanent resident status.

Since 2010, UFCW Canada has awarded Migrant Worker Scholarships to over 65 children and families to assist with their educational pursuits.

The deadline to apply for the 2015 Migrant Workers Scholarship program is December 31, 2015. To find out more about the Migrant Workers Scholarships program, visit ufcw.ca/migrantscholarship.
