Regina, Sask. – June 17, 2015 – Over two dozen young workers from across Saskatchewan recently attended the 4th Annual UFCW Canada Local 1400 Youth Conference in Regina.

The two-day conference featured many guest speakers and focused on a range of social issues such as human rights in the workplace, occupational health and safety, and various economic and environmental issues. Political action was also at the top of the agenda with upcoming federal and provincial elections on the horizon.

Guest speakers at the event included Larry Hubrick, President of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL), SFL Strategic Advisor Kent Peterson, UFCW Local 1400 member-activist Melody Stark, and Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission representative Lewanna Dubray.

The conference also hosted a hot stove session with Saskatchewan NDP candidates Carla Beck, Brett Estey, Kaytlyn Criddle, and Aleana Young, and attendees were given an opportunity to ask the candidates questions about social, economic, and political issues that are important to youth.

In addition, the young workers toured the Saskatchewan provincial legislature in Regina, where they were briefed on the history of the building and greeted by Saskatchewan NDP Deputy Leader and MLA Trent Wotherspoon.

"There was an unmatched level of enthusiasm throughout the conference," says UFCW Local 1400 activist and conference organizer Keith Tsang. "These young workers were engaged by the information the conference provided and left with a greater sense of union pride. The future of our union is in good hands," Brother Tsang adds.
