Toronto – May 22, 2015 – UFCW Canada activists joined allies on the streets of Toronto for the International Day of Action Against Chevron to protest against the Chevron Corporation's poor environmental track record and to demand justice for indigenous communities around the world, who have been poisoned, displaced, or have died from cancer and other diseases linked to Chevron's devastation of the environment.

The event — organized by the Anti-Chevron Committee, an organization comprised of community activists, labour leaders, scholars and students from across Canada — was part of a 12-country rally against Chevron.

Activists united against the Chevron Corporation's disastrous actions globally, including its violations of the human rights of indigenous people in Ecuador as well as the rights of many communities across the globe including Romania, Angola, Brazil, as well as in Canada, where Chevron has threatened the land of several community groups including the Unist'ot'en People of British Columbia with a proposed pipeline.

"We are here today to show our support to the groups and people affected by Chevron and their environmentally reckless tactics," says Anti-Chevron Committee member Santiago Escobar. "We stand in solidarity with those affected as a result of Chevron's actions and demand that Chevron clean up its mess and pay what it owes."

Recently, the Supreme Court of Canada heard arguments on whether Ecuadorian communities affected by Chevron's contamination of the Amazon region can legally pursue the company's assets in Canada, and collect the US$9.5 billion dollars judgement granted to them by the Ecuadorian courts in 2011. A final ruling is expected in the fall of 2015.
