Migrant Workers Scholarship nominator profile: Kateryna Butchenko
Toronto – May 21, 2015 – Evelina Butchenko is one of 20 recipients of the 2014 UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship. Evelina, age 10, was nominated by her mother, Kateryna Butchenko, who came to Canada from Ukraine in the summer of 2014 with her husband and three children to pursue a better life.
Currently employed at the Real Canadian Superstore in the Bakery Department, Kateryna takes pride in doing her job well. She has a strong work ethic and is determined to use her skills to the best of her abilities in Canada. To further her skills, Kateryna takes language courses to improve her English. Kateryna also takes online webCampus courses, which are available to UFCW Canada members and their families for free.
Grateful for the educational opportunities that are readily available to herself and her family, Kateryna feels supported by her union. She hopes to instill the principles of determination and inspiration in her three children, ages 12, 11, and 10, who have also made Canada their new home.
Since 2010, Canada's union for agriculture workers has received over 15,000 applications for our Migrant Worker Scholarship Program, and we have now awarded scholarships to over 65 children to benefit their educational pursuits here and in their home countries.
The deadline to apply for the 2015 Migrant Workers Scholarship is December 31, 2015. To find out more about the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship Program, or to apply for the scholarship online, visit ufcw.ca/migrantscholarship.
