Toronto – November 19, 2014 – Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP) members from across the province assembled in Toronto this past weekend to participate in the party's biennial convention. With dozens of activists in attendance, UFCW Canada represented one of the largest labour union delegations at the ONDP gathering.
The convention delegates discussed the need to elect a progressive provincial government in order to strengthen social assistance, reduce tuition fees, and combat climate change, and passed a number of resolutions dedicated to building a better, fairer Ontario for workers and their families. Delegates also voted to support Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath as part of the convention's leadership review.
Over the course of three days, activists heard from prominent speakers such as Kathleen Monk of CBC The National's "The Insiders," and Andrea Horwath's Chief of Staff, Michael Balagus.
Delegates also voted for a new ONDP Provincial Executive, electing Mary Rita Holland as President, UFCW Canada National Representative Andrew Mackenzie as one of six Vice-Presidents, and Cindy Hackelberg as Treasurer of the party.
On the final day of convention, NDP MP Andrew Cash and the President of the federal NDP, Anne McGrath, called on delegates to renew their commitment to the NDP and build on the party's recent successes going forward, bringing the action-packed, three-day convention to an exhilarating close. The next ONDP convention is scheduled for 2016.
