Workers at Scarborough LensCrafters join the union – UFCW 1000A

Toronto – July 29, 2014 – LensCrafters associates are clearly seeing the union advantage as a new group of LensCrafters employees at Scarborough Town Centre in Toronto have voted "YES" to joining UFCW Canada Local 1000A.The organizing victory makes the Scarborough Town Centre store the fifth LensCrafters location to be represented by Local 1000A.

"This vote is a major victory for the LensCrafters associates at Scarborough Town Centre, who have shown immense strength and determination in standing up for fairness in their workplace," says UFCW Canada Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer. "On behalf of everyone at UFCW Canada Local 1000A, I am pleased to congratulate and welcome the new members at LensCrafters," Sister Sawyer adds.

The successful campaign at Scarborough Town Centre comes on the heels of recent contract approvals at Fairview Mall, Markville Mall, Yorkdale Mall, and Upper Canada Mall, where LensCrafters workers voted to ratify their first collective agreements earlier this month. UFCW Canada Local 1000A’s bargaining team – which included LensCrafters associates – fought hard to achieve fair contracts with across-the-board improvements to wages and working conditions.

"Union representation is the best way to achieve fairness in the workplace," says Local 1000A Organizing Coordinator Jonathan Lobo. "This victory is the result of LensCrafters associates at Scarborough Town Centre coming together to support each other and work towards a better future for everyone," Lobo adds.
