UFCW Canada wins Website of the Year at CALM Awards

UFCW Canada Local 1000A was a big winner at this year’s CALM Awards with “Rosie 2011”, which earned the highly sought-after prize “Best Photograph of the Year”. The award-winning picture was taken by Local 1000A communications representative Joel Thelosen during last year’s International Women’s Day celebration in Toronto.

UFCW Canada recently won top honours at this year’s Canadian Association of Labour Media Awards in Hamilton, Ontario, where www.ufcw.ca was recognized with the prize for Best Overall Website. Singled out for its strong commitment to providing timely content, excellent design, action opportunities, social media integration, and groundbreaking resources like webCampus, the union’s national website www.ufcw.ca was described by CALM judges as a “model” for electronic labour communications.

For the third year in a row, UFCW Canada also won the Muckraker Award, which goes to the communications initiative that best exposes antiunion or antisocial practices. This year, UFCW Canada won the Muckraker for the campaign effort called “Hudak’s Promises”, launched during the last Ontario election to expose the hidden agenda of the Progressive Conservatives and mobilize workers across the province to support truly progressive candidates and political parties.

The UFCW Canada Human Rights Department also took home the Dennis McGann Stroke of Genius Award for its attention grabbing hand sanitizer called “You Can’t Wash Your Hands of Injustice Jason Kenney”, and UFCW Canada Local 1000A communications representative Joel Thelosen earned the highly sought after prize for Best Photograph in recognition of his outstanding image called “Rosie 2011”.

Also known as CALM, the Canadian Association of Labour Media is a national network of labour communicators who share ideas and technical skills to improve the way unions communicate with their members, yet-to-be organized workers, mainstream and new media journalists, and other key audiences.

For the past 36 years, CALM has provided Canadian labour communicators with content and skills development support. For more information about CALM and how to join the association, go to www.calm.ca.
