Solidarity reigned at the recent UFCW Canada Saskatchewan Women’s Conference held in Saskatoon. This unique two-day, annual event, was joined by a record number of participants. Altogether, 53 sisters attended from Saskatchewan-based UFCW Canada Local Unions including 248P, 342P, 649, and 1400. The sisters were joined by numerous guests and speakers who provided educational sessions, as well as a forum to showcase their voices, and even talents.
To kick off the conference Friday evening, the conference hosted an ever-popular, casual social and guest speakers' presentation from some sisters who devote themselves to the community and the social justice movement; notably, Danielle Chartier (MLA Saskatoon-Riversdale), Carol Cisecki (Local 1400 member and NASHI activist), and Kelly Harrington (President of the Saskatoon & District Labour Council).
The next morning, the conference attendees, armed with donations, met at the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre, for a presentation and tour of the facility (www.saskatoonfoodbank.org). The tour shed light on the impact of poverty on nutrition in the community, and was a reminder that the Saskatoon food bank is about so much more than food. It is a progressive and collaborative organization that also provides clothing, literacy programs, and counselling to those in need.
To round out the conference, participants received a primer on estate planning from Sharon Shermann - CPCA, followed by a financial planning seminar presented by UFCW Canada Local 1400 members Marjorie Huard and Colleen Leffler who work at the Affinity Credit Union.
Sisters at the UFCW Canada Saskatchewan Women’s Conference capped off the conference by also raising $450 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
