Thomas Mulcair wins NDP Leadership, thanks UFCW Canada for “constant, steady and wise” support
UFCW Canada activists were a force at the historic NDP Leadership Convention, which proudly elected Thomas Mulcair as the new Leader of Canada’s Official Opposition. Soon after becoming the new Leader of Canada’s most progressive political party, Mulcair thanked UFCW Canada for its outstanding support and for being a leading voice for workers and their families.
“Wayne and the entire UFCW Canada team really made its presence felt at Convention,” said Mulcair in thanking UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley and the union’s large delegation of activists who played an important role in the monumental NDP gathering held in Toronto from March 23 to 24.
“Sincere thanks to UFCW Canada for your constant, steady and wise assistance,” added the new Leader of the Official Opposition and next prime minister of Canada.
Brother Hanley, along with MP Marie-Claude Morin, had the distinct honour of nominating Thomas for the NDP Leadership, which they proudly did admist the roaring applause of the over 4,500 enthusiastic New Democrats – making the two-day event the largest convention in the party’s history.
“Under Tom’s leadership, the NDP will continue to build support across the country, and continue to champion the issues that matter and make a difference for UFCW Canada members and all working people,” said UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley. “UFCW Canada is fully committed to working with Thomas to elect a NDP government that is dedicated to creating a better, fairer Canada.”
Throughout the historic convention, UFCW Canada delegates dedicated themselves to building momentum for the Mulcair campaign, while Tweeting the most breaking news and uploading regular photoblogs to Facebook.
