NDP Leadership candidate Thomas Mulcair has announced his support for a petition that calls on the federal government to review the sale of Zellers to Target, and to join the www.targetfairness.ca campaign in asking the retailer for fairness when it comes to respecting the seniority, wages and benefits of Zellers workers.
Mr. Muclair declared his support for the petition at a recently held event in Toronto that included activists from the campaign like Zellers worker Amanda Bacon, who presented Mr. Mulcair with the petition. As the front-runner in the NDP leadership campaign, Mr. Mulcair gladly accepted the petition and pledged to the young worker that it will be the first petition he introduces to the House of Commons once elected to lead the Official Opposition.
“What Target is doing with the takeover is really unfair,” said Amanda, when asked about the petition. “For people who have worked there a long time having to reapply, they have to start at the bottom when they’ve had benefits and raises and they depend on the job. It’s completely unfair. They are losing something they’ve worked at pretty much their whole life.”
Supporters of the campaign can still sign the petition and encourage their family members, friends and coworkers to add their name as well by downloading a copy of the petition and mailing it to
