UFCW Canada Local 1400 recently hosted a luncheon at its Education Centre in Saskatoon to introduce local union activists to New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership candidate Thomas Mulcair, who was officially endorsed by the union earlier this year.
Chaired by UFCW Canada Local 248P President Maurice Werezak, the luncheon was attended by roughly 60 activists, including members from all four UFCW Canada local unions in Saskatchewan. Among the activists in attendance were Local 649 President Keith Corcoran, Local 342P Secretary Treasurer Grant Rotzien, and Local 1400 President Norm Neault.
UFCW Canada President Wayne Hanley spoke about the detrimental effects of the Harper Government's policies on labour unions and workers. He argued that Canadians need a strong NDP leader to fight against the Harper agenda and offer an inspiring progressive alternative that can propel the NDP to government. Brother Hanley said UFCW Canada has endorsed Mr. Mulcair because of his experience, strength, and determination to stand up for workers.
Thomas Mulcair then took to the stage to outline his vision for the NDP and how he plans to build a better Canada. He promised to continue the work that Jack Layton started and answered questions from the audience. When discussing his accomplishments and the opportunities that lie ahead for the NDP, Mr. Mulcair spoke eloquently and with a strong sense of pride. The local union presidents and luncheon attendees informed Mulcair that they are excited to work with his team in order to elect a truly progressive and worker-friendly NDP government in 2015.
