UFCW Canada Plays an Active Role in Choosing the Next Federal NDP Leader
Like most working people, UFCW Canada members throughout the country have shown a burgeoning interest on who the New Democratic Party will choose as the Leader to succeed Jack Layton, and the National Council of UFCW Canada is being proactive to ensure that the next federal NDP leader will continue to represent the interests of UFCW Canada members and workers throughout the Canada.
In early December, a committee formed by the National Council to review the candidates platforms and policies met with the candidates in Ottawa to consider for possible endorsation of one candidate prior to the leadership convention taking place in Toronto on March 24, 2012 .
After meeting with the candidates and watching the first televised leadership debate, the committee drafted a short list of candidates who are poised to best serve the interests of UFCW Canada members and all working families. Early in the New Year the committee will meet with those chosen leadership candidates to decide who the union will recommend to the National Council as the person who will best represent the members in the House of Commons and who has the best possibility of forming the next federal government.
Because the leadership convention will feature a one-member, one-vote format, NDP members will be able to vote for the next Leader at convention through a mail-in ballot or by internet. UFCW Canada Local Unions have been encouraging their members to become members of the NDP so UFCW Canada can have the strongest voice possible in choosing the next federal NDP Leader.
If members would like more information on the leadership convention, or on how to become a member of the federal NDP, please contact Bob Linton ([email protected]) or Andrew Mackenzie ([email protected]) at the National Office.
