Jack Layton, 1950 — 2011. "A great Canadian, a strong friend to UFCW Canada members and a champion for all working families.”
UFCW Canada members across the country are joining the country in mourning the loss of Jack Layton, leader of the Official Opposition and federal NDP, who died on August 22 after a very brave and courageous battle with cancer.
“Jack Layton was a constant source of optimism who inspired hope and worked tirelessly toward creating a better, fairer Canada,” says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley. “He was a great Canadian, a strong friend to UFCW Canada members, and a champion for all working families.
“Although Jack was a champion for working people throughout Canada, his passing is a loss for all Canadians. His tenacity to fight to make Canada a more compassionate and equitable country will be missed.
“UFCW Canada and its activists from coast to coast fully share Jack’s commitment to a better, fairer Canada and we will continue to be inspired by his vision and will continue to work hard toward realizing it,” adds Brother Hanley.
“On behalf of UFCW Canada members, staff and leadership, we send our sincere condolences to Olivia and the entire family.”
