South Africa hosts World Festival of Youth
On December 13 thousands of youth and students arrived in South Africa to celebrate and participate in the 17th World Festival of Youth and Students. The Festival, which was first held in 1947 and has been held every 4 to 5 years ever since, brings together 15,000 youth from over 100 countries. During the festival, delegates participated in workshops and seminars on issues ranging from social and political action to community building.
UFCW Canada national representative Pablo Godoy, who attended the 16th World Festival of Youth and Students, says “the WFYS is a great opportunity for youth to become more in tune with the realities of our world, to experience and interact with other like-minded activists and to learn from each other through sharing experiences.”
This year the Canadian Delegation sent over 100 participants who through fundraising — including support from UFCW Canada — offset the cost to travel and participate in the event.
“UFCW Canada strongly encourages all youth to become active members in their communities and to seek opportunities like the festival to enhance their knowledge and experiences,” says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley in pledging the union’s support. “It is for that reason that UFCW Canada stands with the Canadian Delegation of Youth and Students participating in this important and exciting festival.”
