Running back to Saskatoon
The official convention call has gone out for this year’s UFCW Canada National Defence Fund (NDF) Convention, to be held during a conference July 11-13 in Saskatoon. The conference also includes sectoral meetings for the packinghouse, poultry, flour milling, hospitality, and soft drink industries.
“This is a valuable conference each year, giving leaders and activist members from the various industries an opportunity to sit down and compare notes on what is going on in bargaining as well as in the workplace,” says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley, who is also chair of the NDF.
The National Defence Fund is an optional strike-and-lockout contingency fund that provides financial assistance, strike support, and related payments to participating bargaining units in the event of a strike or lockout. It was created in 1986 during a time of upheaval in Canada’s packinghouse industry, but today has member bargaining units from most sectors employing UFCW Canada-represented workers. Registration opens on the evening of Sunday, July 11, with full-day working sessions scheduled for the Monday and Tuesday.
