Ottawa – May 24, 2014 – UFCW Canada, the nation’s most progressive union, joined thousands of Canadians to successfully pressure the federal government to drastically alter the Unfair Elections Act. Bill C-23 – deceitfully dubbed the Fair Elections Act by the Conservatives – was Harper’s latest attempt to dismantle democracy in Canada. Following a firestorm of opposition across the country, including a comprehensive UFCW Canada lobbying and media campaign, the government was forced to gut the bill of some of its most controversial elements.
Toronto – May 23, 2014 – UFCW Canada activists recently joined allies and social justice advocates for the launch of Unions Matter: Advancing Democracy, Economic Equality and Social Justice — a new book that documents how unions are critical to reducing income inequality and improving the lives of everyday Canadians.
Campbellville, Ont. – May 23, 2014 – UFCW Canada members across Ontario are encouraged to support blood cancer research by participating in the annual Returns for Leukemia bottle drive on the weekend of May 24-25, 2014.
Ottawa – May 22, 2014 – Most Western industrialized nations belong to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which represents the world’s richest economies. A recent OECD report finds that income inequality within these countries has significantly increased during the past three decades.
Washington, D.C. – May 22, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 247 recently partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) to raise thousands of dollars for blood cancer research by participating in the Nike Women's Half Marathon in Washington, D.C.
Montreal – May 21, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 500 (TUAC 500) members at Maxi Gatineau have achieved a new collective agreement. The new contract runs until August 30, 2020.
Toronto – May 20, 2014 – Troubled by a botched expansion into Canada and a data breach scandal south of the border, Target has fired Tony Fisher, the company’s president of Canadian operations. In his place, the retail giant announced yet another American vice president will take over the handling of stores in Canada.
