Canada’s leading union is questioning why a foundation that trumpets “freedom, democracy and human rights” as “fundamental values” has chosen Stephen Harper as their pick for the 2012 World Statesman of the Year. The Award, doled out annually, is the creation of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, an American group started in 1965 as an “interfaith coalition of business and religious leaders that promotes peace, tolerance and ethnic conflict resolution.”
The Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating the workplace death of a Mexican migrant agriculture worker who was fatally injured on September 10, at an orchard operation near Belleville. Fausto Martinez-Izazaga, 38, died when an industrial water tank at the agriculture complex fell and crushed him.
Tuition fees for post-secondary education have increased to record levels in most provinces, according to a Statistics Canada release. Tuition fees are the main barrier to post-secondary education. Student debt in Canada is becoming unbearable and is having a detrimental impact on students’ mental health; the higher the financial worry the greater levels of anxiety, tension, difficulty sleeping and other disorders.

Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico - UFCW Canada and the Mexican state of Guerrero recently strengthened their cooperative ties to improve conditions for Guerrero migrants who work in Canadian agriculture through an intensive workshop that was recently held in the state capital, Chilpancingo.
UFCW Canada Local Union 102 member Steven Nadon is the second Canadian student to win this year's prestigious UFCW International Scholarship, which is awarded annually to eight UFCW members or their dependents across North America. The scholarship covers $8,000 in tuition fees over a period of four years.
UFCW Canada activists and educators from across the country recently participated in another successful Training and Education Conference, hosted annually by the National Council Education and Political Action Committee.
